Hands of God and The Body
Hands of God and The Body, by David Cuesta. Images and prints from a series of performance works by the artist David Cuesta. These works speak about the mistreatment of indigenous populations in Latin America during the Spanish conquest, as described by the friar Bartolomé de las Casas in 'A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies' (Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias) published in 1552. In the book las Casas describes how Spanish soldiers would tie palm tree leaves to indigenous people and set them on fire, and also how they would also cut off villagers hands and tie them to their belts before attacking more towns.
